Tall Ted Hallaman
DJ
First year at WKHR: 2004
Born and Raised: PA
My Story: Ted Hallaman has been on Cleveland airwaves since 1960 when he first arrived as a “utility” announcer for WGAR, 1220 am. Forty five years and a half-dozen radio stations later, Ted has finally retired from commercial radio, and has become a volunteer DeeJay at WKHR, 91.5 fm…a move that immensely pleases the many listeners who have followed him through his career. At WKHR, Hallaman is doing his best to keep memories alive for those who are learning that in WKHR, there is a radio station that still plays “our kind of music.” Hallaman says, “Actually, it’s the same music I played when I first started out in 1952. Back then people called them “hits.” Now they’re called “oldies.” Hallaman is a native of western Pennsylvania, a Navy veteran, and a graduate of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He got the radio “bug” while in college and soon was spending more time at the university’s radio station than at the campus newspaper where he was supposed to be following his journalism major. After graduation, Ted worked as a reporter on a small-town daily newspaper, but jumped at the chance to try broadcasting at a nearby radio station where versatility was the norm. Then came stints in Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and finally Cleveland. After nine years at WGAR he worked four years at WHK am. Ted finally moved to fm radio with WQAL where he did mornings for six years before moving to WDOK for an additional six years. Later, he moved back into am radio at WRMR where he handled the morning show until that station was sold. Ted is married, has three grown sons, and is a five-time grandfather. Ted and his wife, Pat, live in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and – weather permitting – sit on the front steps and wait for the ice cream truck.
